Chapter Ten

Elliot spent a good few hours pacing his room and trying to decide on a course of action. A thousand options presented themselves in tendrils that he couldn’t quite grasp. None of them were right. None of them grabbed him and went, hey, I might actually work! Each one was crazier than the last.

When it got to late evening and the sun was setting, he took himself downstairs to get some dinner.

There were a few diners in the bar, and an older man standing behind the bar where Naomi had stood that afternoon. Elliot almost froze at the scene, feet rooted to the floor and ice crawling through his veins, but he forced himself onward, what he hoped was a pleasant smile on his face. “Hi,” he said to the man antsily pacing behind the bar. “Is it too late for some dinner?”

It took the guy a few seconds to realize he was being spoken to, but then he turned around with an obviously false smile. “Of course not. There’s still some curry left, if that takes your fancy.”

“That sounds great. Am I all okay to take a seat anywhere?”

“Of course. I’ll get someone to bring it out to you.”

“Thanks.”

“Wait,” the man said. “You haven’t happened to see Naomi anywhere, have you? The girl normally behind the bar? She seems to have disappeared.”

Elliot frowned. “Not since this morning when I went out.” It was a response he’d thought a lot about before coming down. It made more sense to say that he hadn’t seen her when he came back.

“Well, thanks anyway. Enjoy your meal.”

He ate his meal in silence, not tasting it on his tongue despite knowing, in the back of his mind, that his mouth should have been burning from the intense spices. He looked longingly at the alcohol menu, but resisted. He needed his mind to be sharp if he was going to figure a way out of this mess.

After dinner, he returned to his room and the body of Naomi on the bed, exactly how he had left it.

She stared at him, angry rather than mournful.

He wrapped her in the bed sheets and resumed his pacing. He had to get her out of Wood. He had to assume that Eden’s CSI was up-to-date with Earth’s standards, and his fingerprints, DNA, and semen would be all over the body. If they found her, and then him, they would be able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he’d been the one to kill her.

So the body had to go. He had to take her somewhere that either no one would find her, or find a way to destroy it completely.

Being in a hotel room meant he didn’t have access to any ordinary household supplies, and finding a shop where he could find vats of acid didn’t seem likely or like it would help him fly under the radar.

Suddenly, he reached into his satchel and grabbed his console. The fact he had acquired a new ability had been completely overlooked by his panic about having killed a woman.
